I am always on the hunt for new low calorie or low sugar products to try and sugar free syrups are something I use almost daily to add a bit of life to my food. Let me make one thing clear, I’ve read extensively on clinical studies regarding sweeteners and sugar replacement products and for me personally I am quite happy to consume them in limitation. These particular products contain Sucralose as the main sweetening agent, which for me is acceptable though I do understand that some people have an aversion to sugar replacements.

I’ve tried many sugar free syrups in my time like Waldens, Skinny Syrups, Starbucks and random own brands I come across so I’m interested to see how MyProtein stacks up.

I regularly order from MyProtein however the following is a completely impartial review, I’ll never endorse a product unless I truly feel it’s worthy!

I picked up four flavours that really called out to me:

  • Maple
  • Coffee
  • Chocolate
  • Butterscotch

The syrups retail at around £4.50 for a 400ml bottle. You can pick them up direct from MyProtein

Chocolate syrup

This was the syrup that I was most excited for but unfortunately most disappointed by! It just doesn’t taste even remotely chocolately to me, it tastes more like strawberry or some sort of fruit? I find this odd as I would have thought chocolate would be one of the easiest flavours to emulate.

Nonetheless it’s still a nice tasting sweet syrup and goes very nicely with my morning protein oats.

The texture is almost gel like, smooth and silky, which is a definite bonus.

Coffee syrup

The Coffee syrup is a bit strange, for some reason this flavour tastes a bit weaker and almost watery, although the consistency of the syrup is the same. It’s nice though and has a reasonably coffee like flavour.

When we holiday in Italy we always buy copious amounts of coffee yogurt and this syrup is perfect for mixing with plain yogurt to create a similar taste, I’ll definitely buy this one again but maybe not as often.

Butterscotch syrup

Butterscotch flavours take me back to Angel Delight as a child and this syrup is so close to that taste! This syrup really quite moreish and the texture is smooth and silky making it really nice addition to oats, egg whites or protein puds.

I have tried it in coffee too but the taste wasn’t strong enough to come through, which is a little disappointing but I don’t feel like these products are intended for that use anyhow.

Maple syrup

Oh maple syrup, perfect on just about anything!  Though you just can’t match real maple syrup this one certainly makes for a good swap for cutting down those calories. I am a HUGE protein pancake fan and this syrup is just perfection over the top with a sprinkle of nuts and dust of cinnamon!

The consistency is the same gel like thick sauce, I can’t help but dollop it on! Amazing!

So there you have it! Hopefully some of you will find that useful and are inspired to give these products a try… let me know how you get on!
